How to Get Started
The state of Iowa requires you to be licensed in order for you to be able to sell real estate. In order to get licensed, you must:
•Take an approved 60 hour Pre-license test course in a classroom setting or online.
•Successfully pass the national and state Real Estate Exam.
•Successfully complete 12 hours of Developing Professionalism and Ethics Practices, 12 hours of Buying Practices and 12 hours of Listing Practices.
•Complete a required Criminal Background check.
Once you complete these requirements, you will need to choose a sponsor broker, who you may work for upon licensure, who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS®, the Iowa Association of REALTORS®, and his/her local real estate board. Once you have selected a sponsor broker, you are ready to get your license.
Other General Requirements:
•Must be 18 years of age – no residency or citizenship requirement.
•May not have had an application rejected in Iowa or any other state in the last 12 months.
Other Helpful Tips:
•When you first begin your real estate career, contact every one you know (your sphere of influence) and let them know that you are in the business, and that you would appreciate any help you can get. Be sure to ask for referrals. Start collecting e-mail addresses and contact information right away.
•Save your money and don’t forget to pay quarterly taxes. Taxes are not withheld from independent contractors and are your responsibility.
•Take as many real estate related educational courses as you can in your first year. Don’t learn the hard way.
•Get involved in the office even when you don’t feel like it. The office is a great place to network, to learn and to surround yourself with people who understand the business and can support your efforts.
•Get a coach/mentor. A good real estate coach is the key to success in real estate. You can always benefit from someone to hold you accountable, keep you on track and encourage you.
•Always keep a positive attitude toward your life and your work, and enjoy what you are doing!
