Van Meter, Iowa provides small town living with access to "big city" amenities that prides itself on its quality of life and services. This city provides its residents with ample recreational activities, community events and a variety of things to do and see for every type of person.
For the outdoor enthusiast, Van Meter offers multiple parks, trails and picnic facilities with Johnson Park and the Van Meter Recreation Complex being the largest two. Johnson Park has a shelter, a drinking fountain, playground equipment and a short walking trail with benches that surround a small pond. It is a picturesque area that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. In addition to the work involved with the parks, the board also sponsors the annual Easter Egg Hunt, the city wide garage sale and plant sale, movie nights in the park, a golf night and Halloween Fun in the park. The Van Meter Recreation Complex also provides a host of recreational opportunities for everyone in the city. The complex located on approximately 32 acres bordering the Raccoon River provides youth and adult sport fields for soccer, baseball, softball, and football.
For those who like a quieter day, the Van Meter Library offers a wide variety of events for bookworms of any age. The Bob Feller Museum pays homage to the Van Meter native, nicknamed the Heater from Van Meter, who is known as one of the best pitchers in MLB history. The museum also hosts sport-related events throughout the year, such as meet and greets with famous sports players.
Every June, the entire city comes out to celebrate Raccoon River Days that features a parade, games, food, music and more! The Van Meter Farmers Market runs each Saturday from June through October and offers visitors seasonal produce, home-baked goods and other items!
