Why should I consider a career in Real Estate?
Real estate provides a unique opportunity to build and run your own business with a minimum amount of up front expenses. Although it’s not for everyone, most people like the idea of not having a limit placed on the amount of income they can earn. The idea of flexible work hours can also be a huge incentive. Realtors also have the luxury of actually having a career that they like, not just a job to earn income.

What are some things I should expect when I'm starting out?
Highs and lows are part of any sales career, some months will be higher producing than others; consistency over time will be the key to your success. Expect to invest up to $2,200 during the first 60 to 90 days to cover licensing, education courses, business cards, and Board of REALTOR® dues. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices First Realty will offer you your own office space, marketing support, office supplies, technology, and personal one on one training to help you get started. The first paycheck may not come for a few months, because real estate sales are paid on a commission basis, it takes some time to establish and build a customer and client base for your business.

How do I get business?
Your goal is to connect buyers and sellers and assist with a smooth sales transaction by delivering exceptional customer service. The way you accomplish this is by utilizing various prospecting systems that develop potential leads. Your business can come from people you already know or from complete strangers. You will be trained in all aspects of prospecting and sales and will be able to create a career that will be long lasting. It is critical to create a business plan and set goals with your manager to ensure that in some way you are prospecting for new clients every single day!

What kind of person does well in real estate?
Almost anyone can do well in real estate. It really isn’t a matter of education or superior salesmanship. Although these things help, it’s more about being committed to your own success and being willing to work hard. At BHHS First Realty, we’ve had people from all walks of life become tremendously successful. Some general questions to ask yourself that might help you determine if real state is for you.

How do I get started and what are the requirements?
1. Complete the real estate assessment. This assessment process will help us provide you with the individualized coaching and development necessary to assure your success once licensed. By participating in the assessment we will also be able to provide you with insights and answers to your questions about how you will do in the career of real estate.
2. Meet with one of our representatives or managers and sign up for the pre-licensing class. This is a 60-hour class that provides the knowledge and tools to pass the required state-licensing exam.

How do I obtain a criminal background check packet?
Call 515-453-7641 or e-mail us.

What does it cost to get started?
We estimate the start-up expenses to be approximately $2,200. Some of these expenses include membership in the local, state and National Association of Realtors, licensing fees, etc. Your manager will elaborate on what fees are due and when. As with all business models, actual costs may vary and our estimate is no assurance that your actual costs might not vary.

Are there recurring costs?
Just like running any business there are associated costs and real estate is no exception. Every year you will have similar recurring fees as those above.

What type of training is available to me through First Realty?
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices First Realty offers several training programs. The first is BHHS First Realty School, an intensive 60-hour pre-licensing program, taught by BHHS First Realty’s in-house trainer. Next is a two week program to get you started in your new career. This course is also taught by our in-house trainer as well as some of BHHS First Realty’s top real estate professionals. If you’re interested in ongoing training or sales skills development, we have multiple opportunities to expand your knowledge and develop your skills.

Your manager will also work with you to create a Personalized Business Plan, outlining your goals, and a Personal Marketing Plan as the blueprint for achieving that goal. Training is something that we believe is ongoing. We always have new classes offered to keep ahead of the ever changing customer and market place.

How much money can I really make?
This really depends on you. Realtors are paid strictly on a commission basis, so if the idea of being paid what you’re worth appeals to you, then real estate is your choice. Most hard-working agents can meet or exceed their required income needs their first year.
